Company history

British Energy had its origins in two publicly owned organisations, the Central Electricity Generating Board and the South of Scotland Electricity Board, which supplied most of the UK's electricity for almost 40 years. In 1990, when Britain's non-nuclear powers stations were privatised, the nuclear power stations remained in public ownership with two new companies formed to operate them - Nuclear Electric in England & Wales and Scottish Nuclear in Scotland.

In 1995, the Government decided that, while the older Magnox stations should remain in public ownership, the modern nuclear power stations should be privatised. British Energy was created and floated in 1996.
