Partnering and the Internet

Electronic contracting is inevitable; the US Department of Defense has said it will insist its contractors 'go electronic'. For the UK public sector there is also no choice. The government has firm" targets for the adoption of electronic trading. (MoD Procurement Executive, 1999)

Since the foundation of PSL ten years ago the then revolutionary idea of partnering between companies has been implemented widely. However, the pace of change is increasing and the nature of developments within and between organisations is changing. The revolution in communications through the Internet and mobile telephones are only the most obvious examples of this.

Other important drivers of change

• the increasing interdependence of customers and suppliers,
• the greater premium that is placed on knowledge, and
• the focus on branding and people rather than goods and capital.
